Green-blotched Parrotfish

The green-blotched parrotfish (Scarus quoyi) is a mid-sized member of a family well known for their fused, beak-like teeth and their role as constant grazers on reef algae. Found across a wide stretch of the Indo-West Pacific, from India east to Vanuatu and as far north as the Ryukyu Islands, this species gravitates toward the outer edges of reefs and channel areas rich in coral growth. In the wild, individuals venture onto intertidal flats at high tide to feed, working through algae with that characteristic scraping motion parrotfish are famous for. They tend to be seen alone or drifting in small loose groups, and their temperament in captivity follows suit. Generally peaceful and not inclined to harass tankmates. That said, parrotfish as a group are notoriously difficult to keep long-term, and the green-blotched is no exception. Their constant need to graze makes replicating a suitable diet one of the bigger challenges, and they really do best when keepers can provide conditions that mimic a well-established reef environment. This is a species better suited to intermediate or experienced fishkeepers who understand the demands of the family, rather than a straightforward pick for a community setup.
