Found in clear, fast-moving hill streams with gravelly beds in the Eastern Himalayas of India, this small nemacheilid loach, Schistura devdevi, belongs to one of the most species-rich genera in the freshwater world. Schistura currently numbers around 190 described members, with more than 100 of those added since 1990, and the group keeps growing as collectors and researchers push further into remote drainages. It occasionally turns up in the hobby under the informal name 'firefly loach', though availability has always been limited and detailed taxonomic work on this particular species is still incomplete. In the aquarium it appears to be a calm, bottom-oriented fish that stays small even by loach standards, topping out well under two inches. It is generally considered a reasonable fit for community tanks, provided tankmates are chosen thoughtfully. Midwater schooling fish from similar Himalayan or South Asian biotopes, danios, devarios, pethias, rasboras, and relatives, make natural companions and have the added benefit of drawing benthic species like this one out into more open behavior. A setup that mimics its native habitat, with good flow, well-oxygenated water, and a sandy or pebbly substrate, will help it settle in and show its best behavior. Given its mild temperament and modest size, it is considered accessible for newer keepers willing to do their research.
