The Asian Bonytongue (Scleropages formosus) is one of the most culturally loaded fish in the freshwater hobby. Revered across eastern Asia as a living symbol of prosperity and good fortune, and protected under CITES Appendix I since 1975. Native to blackwater streams and forest-shaded peat swamps stretching from southern Myanmar down through the Malay Peninsula and across Indonesia, this fish is built for the surface, where it cruises with an almost prehistoric deliberateness, hunting insects, fish, and smaller vertebrates with equal confidence. It grows large, genuinely large, and needs a serious commitment in tank space to thrive. A tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable, as it can launch itself clear of the water with very little warning. Several colour forms exist across the range, from the widespread green form to the prized super red of Borneo's Kapuas River and the crossback golden of Peninsular Malaysia, all of which are currently treated as variants of a single species pending taxonomic review. Hybrids between forms are common in the trade, so provenance matters. It is a paternal mouthbrooder, carrying young until they are already a respectable size. Legal trade requires microchipped fish with proper CITES documentation, and in some countries, including the United States, the trade remains restricted entirely.
