The scribbled pufferfish (Arothron mappa) is one of the larger puffers you'll encounter in the hobby, and its name couldn't be more fitting. The body is covered in a detailed, maze-like network of lines and spots that genuinely resembles a contour map. Color and pattern vary between individuals, but the general effect is unmistakable. In the wild, this species ranges across a huge swath of the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa and South Africa all the way out to Samoa and up toward Japan, typically inhabiting clear lagoons and sheltered reef slopes. Adults tend to gravitate toward deeper drop-offs and are almost always found alone, rarely straying far from a convenient refuge. Despite an intimidating adult size that can push past two feet, the scribbled pufferfish is considered a manageable species for dedicated beginners who can meet its considerable space requirements. We're talking a serious tank commitment here. It feeds on algae, sponges, and benthic invertebrates in the wild, and that powerful beak means tank decorations and invertebrate tankmates are at genuine risk. A fish-only setup with robust, similarly sized companions is usually the way to go. With proper care, expect a long-lived companion that develops real personality over time.
