The Andaman Fox-face (Siganus magnificus) is a rabbitfish from the eastern Indian Ocean, found along coral reef systems stretching from Thailand's Similan Islands south through Java, Indonesia. Its common name nods to its fox-like snout, which is a feature shared with close relatives but expressed here in a particularly distinctive package of contrasting black, white, and yellow patterning that makes identification straightforward. In the wild, adults tend to form bonded pairs and cruise reef edges grazing on algae, while juveniles are more secretive, tucking into coral structure for cover. Occasionally individuals turn up alone, but paired adults are the more typical sight on their home reefs. In the aquarium, this species is a solid choice for hobbyists with some saltwater experience. Not because it's fragile, but because it needs a roomy tank with plenty of algae growth and occasional supplemental plant-based foods to stay in good condition. Like all rabbitfish, it carries venomous spines along its dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins, so careful handling during transport or tank work is worth keeping in mind. Given proper conditions, these are long-lived fish that reward patient keepers with years of active, visible behavior.
