The Sorong Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia fredericki) is a lesser-known member of the rainbowfish family, native to the waters around Sorong in West Papua, Indonesia. Like most melanotaeniids, it carries that classic deep-bodied, laterally compressed profile, and males develop the rich iridescent coloration the group is known for, which tends to intensify noticeably when fish are in good condition or displaying to rivals and potential mates. Females are typically more subdued, as is the norm across the genus. In the aquarium, this species does best when kept in a group. Rainbowfish are schooling fish by nature, and a larger group lets you watch the full range of social behavior, including the lively sparring displays males put on for each other. These interactions are harmless but genuinely entertaining to watch. Because wild populations come from the relatively pristine freshwater systems of New Guinea, clean, well-oxygenated water with good flow is worth prioritizing. Melanotaenia fredericki sits at an intermediate care level. Not a fish you'd hand to a complete beginner, but not a demanding species either. A hobbyist comfortable with regular maintenance and a decent-sized planted or open setup will find these fish rewarding and long-lived.
