The firewood catfish (Sorubimichthys planiceps) is one of those species that stops you in your tracks the first time you see a full-grown specimen. Native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of South America, this is a genuinely large predatory catfish. Adults can reach well over three feet, and the species has been recorded pushing past five feet in the wild. That alone tells you this fish is not for casual setups. The flattened head and elongated body are classic traits of a river predator built for ambushing prey in open water, and in the wild its diet consists largely of free-swimming fish and other nekton. Expect the same in captivity: this is a committed carnivore that will eat anything it can fit in its mouth, so tankmates need to be chosen with that firmly in mind. Being nocturnal, it tends to be less active during the day and more likely to be seen cruising and hunting after lights out. Keeping one responsibly means committing to a truly enormous tank. This is very much a fish for dedicated keepers with the infrastructure to match, not a casual addition to a community setup.
