The Southern Striped Raphael (Platydoras armatulus) is a boldly patterned catfish from the Paraná River basin in South America, wearing a dark brown body crossed by broad cream or white horizontal stripes along the flanks and belly. It goes by several names in the trade, striped dora, striped talking catfish, striped raphael, and that "talking" label is well earned. This fish produces clearly audible sounds using two distinct mechanisms: grinding its locked pectoral spines against their sockets for a buzzing tone, or vibrating the swim bladder via a specialized muscle attached to the skull for a deeper resonance. You can sometimes hear it right through the aquarium glass, and it will definitely speak up when netted. Speaking of netting. Be careful, because those pectoral spines lock outward and will tangle in mesh and puncture fingers without much encouragement. Behaviorally it is genuinely peaceful toward anything it cannot swallow, and groups will often pile into the same cave or refuge during daylight hours. The catch is that smaller fish will disappear, so it really belongs in a community of medium to larger tankmates. There are no captive breeding records, which makes it one of those species that remains a bit mysterious despite decades in the hobby.
