The spiketail paradise fish (Pseudosphromenus cupanus) is a quietly rewarding species from the slow, vegetated waters of southern and southeastern Asia, ranging from India and Sri Lanka through Myanmar, the Malay Peninsula, and into Indonesia. In the wild it favors rice paddies, ditches, and heavily planted shallows, sometimes in water with mild tidal influence. Environments that are often low in oxygen, which explains why this species belongs to the labyrinth fishes, a group capable of breathing atmospheric air directly. Compared to some of its more boisterous labyrinth relatives, it uses this ability less frequently, but the organ is there when needed. In terms of looks, the spiketail is a subtler fish than its common name might suggest. Males develop elongated, pointed central tail rays as they mature, and the species can be told from its close relative P. dayi by the absence of bold lateral stripes along the head and body. Behavior-wise it is peaceful but genuinely timid, and it tends to get lost or outcompeted in busy community setups. A species tank or a quiet, well-planted arrangement with small, unobtrusive tankmates suits it far better. Breeding is one of the real highlights. Males build compact bubble nests in cavities or under overhangs, and watching a pair spawn and the male tend the eggs is genuinely fascinating for anyone interested in labyrinth fish reproduction.
