The spotted blue-eye (Pseudomugil gertrudae) is a dwarf rainbowfish relative native to the rainforest streams, pandanus-lined creeks, swampy marshes, and lily lagoons of northern Australia, southern New Guinea, and the Aru Islands. In the wild it gravitates toward heavily vegetated areas with muddy bottoms and submerged wood, often in soft, slightly acidic water filtered through dense overhanging canopy. Despite reaching barely an inch and a half at most, males are remarkably showy fish. The dark spotting in their dorsal, anal, and caudal fins is distinctive within the genus, and rival males spread and flutter those fins in elaborate competitive displays that are genuinely fascinating to watch. This behavior emerges best when the species is kept in a proper group of eight or more, which also helps the fish feel secure enough to act naturally rather than hiding. They are peaceful but easily bullied, so mixing them into a busy community rarely ends well. They do best in a species-focused setup or alongside similarly sized, gentle fish and small shrimp. Wild-caught individuals are essentially unavailable; what you find in the hobby is commercially produced stock. Breeding is achievable with some effort, and fry are tiny enough to need infusoria-type foods initially. This is an intermediate-level species. Not difficult, but it rewards attention to detail.
