Thorn coral (Stylocoeniella cocosensis) is a small, encrusting hard coral from the Indo-West Pacific, where it tends to tuck itself under reef overhangs and into shaded nooks rather than competing for prime real estate in full sunlight. The colonies stay compact and low-profile, building a textured coenosteum surface dotted with fine spinules and very small, irregularly projecting corallites. Each one barely a millimeter across. Septa appear in two roughly equal cycles, and the columellae are modest in size, giving the coral a finely detailed but understated look overall. In terms of color, expect a yellowish-green that reads as fairly subtle compared to flashier reef inhabitants. In the aquarium, this species demands strong, consistent flow and intense lighting, which puts it squarely in the advanced category. Not because it's fragile in the way some SPS corals are, but because recreating the dynamic, well-oxygenated conditions it experiences on natural reef structures takes some dialed-in equipment and experience. Placement under a ledge or in a lower-flow shadow within a high-flow tank can mimic the overhangs it naturally favors. It's a niche pick, but for the reefer who appreciates fine structural detail over bold color, it's a genuinely interesting encrusting species to work with.
