Blue-lined Sea Bream
Symphorichthys spilurus
Also known as: Blue and Gold Striped Snapper, Blue-lined Sea-bream, Blue-lined Sea-perch
A bold reef-associated snapper that grows into a true centerpiece fish.

About
The blue-lined sea bream (Symphorichthys spilurus) is a large, handsome snapper from the Western Pacific, ranging from the Ryukyu Islands and Philippines south through New Guinea, Sulawesi, Palau, and the Admiralty Islands all the way to the Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia. Adults are typically found over sandy bottoms close to coral reef structure, usually moving alone rather than in groups. Though mature fish will gather along seaward reef edges to spawn. In the wild they hunt a mixed diet of smaller fish, crustaceans, and mollusks that live in or around the sand, which translates well to a varied meaty diet in captivity. Despite being listed as beginner-friendly for a saltwater fish, the sheer size this species reaches demands serious planning. You're looking at an animal that can push two feet in length and will need genuine space to move comfortably. A 200-gallon minimum is not padding; these fish use the room. That said, their care requirements are otherwise straightforward, and with a long potential lifespan of well over a decade, a well-kept specimen becomes a long-term resident worth investing in. Not a community reef fish by any stretch, but a rewarding species for a large fish-only or FOWLR setup.
