Catfish is a broad label, but Synodontis membranaceus earns its own spotlight as one of the more substantial members of the mochokid family. Native to a wide sweep of West and North African river systems, the Nile basin, Senegal, Gambia, Volta, Niger, and Lake Chad drainage, this is a fish shaped by slow, deep nearshore waters rather than the fast-moving shallows where many of its relatives thrive. In the wild it feeds opportunistically across multiple food sources: plankton, detritus, surface insects, midge larvae, small crustaceans, and mollusks, which tells you something about its adaptability as a predator-scavenger. In the aquarium that translates to a fish that accepts a variety of meaty foods without much fuss. What demands real planning is its size. Adults regularly reach 15 to 20 inches, so this is not a fish you can shoehorn into a modest community setup. You need a genuinely large tank and tankmates that can hold their own. Its care level is pegged at intermediate, mainly because of the space commitment and its carnivorous diet rather than any particular water chemistry difficulty. Given appropriate conditions it can live a decade or more, making it a long-term commitment for dedicated large-catfish keepers.
