The Onespot Squeaker (Synodontis notata) is a catfish from the Congo River basin, found across a broad range that includes Pool Malebo and the Kasai and Ubangi drainages, as well as the Chiloango River. Unlike most of its genus, which tend to skulk around after lights-out, this species is notably active during the day, which makes it a much more visible and engaging tank resident than the average Synodontis. Its common name refers to the bold single dark spot on its flank, though hobbyists should know that several regional forms exist. Some individuals carry three, six, or even twelve spots, while others have none at all. This variation causes real confusion in the trade, and fish sold as S. notata are sometimes actually S. nummifer or S. congica. True to the Synodontis group, it is an omnivore and a solid choice for a beginner willing to plan around its adult size and temperament. The catch is that personality: this fish becomes increasingly territorial as it matures, and it is especially confrontational toward other Synodontis species. Keeping more than one in a tank is asking for trouble unless the setup is genuinely spacious. Good tankmates include robust West African cichlids, Alestiid tetras, Mormyrids, and similarly sized robust fish. Nothing small enough to become a meal.
