About

The Congo Squeaker (Synodontis pleurops) is one of the more distinctive members of its genus, and once you've seen those oversized eyes you'll understand why 'Bigeye Squeaker' is another name it goes by. Native to the middle and upper Congo River basin, including Pool Malebo and the Kasai and Ubangi drainages, this is a fish shaped by life in murky, complex environments where good low-light vision pays off. In the aquarium it leans hard into that nocturnal lifestyle: unless you keep the tank dimly lit or work with a moonlight setup, you may rarely see it out and about. When it does emerge, it tends to move along surfaces rather than through open water, grazing driftwood, rocks, and broad-leaved plants with its downturned mouth. Coloration and patterning vary noticeably depending on where a given fish originates. Temperamentally it's peaceful and can share a tank with most non-aggressive species. African tetras, Pelvicachromis or Anomalochromis cichlids, and small mormyrids are all sensible companions. It can be a bit skittish, so plenty of hiding spots help it settle in. Captive breeding is essentially reliant on hormone induction, so most fish available in the hobby are farm-produced rather than wild-caught.
