The lattice blaasop (Takifugu oblongus) is a mid-to-large pufferfish from the Indo-West Pacific, ranging across a broad arc from South Africa through Indonesia and up to Japan, with populations as far south as Australia. Like most puffers, it carries a beak-like fused dentition capable of crushing hard-shelled prey, so a carnivore diet featuring meaty, crunchy foods is the right approach. What sets this species apart geographically is its comfort in shallow coastal zones and its willingness to venture into brackish water. An unusual trait among puffers that speaks to its general adaptability. Appearance-wise, the body follows the classic puffer shape: rounded and compact, with the characteristic lattice or reticulated patterning on the skin that gives the fish its common name. Adults reach a respectable size, so this is not a fish you squeeze into a smaller setup. The good news is that despite its size and the typical puffer reputation for assertiveness toward tankmates, it is listed as a workable choice for relatively new saltwater keepers. That said, its biting capability means anything with delicate fins or small enough to tempt it should be housed elsewhere. A long-lived fish kept well, the lattice blaasop can be a genuinely rewarding centerpiece animal.
