The Tanganyika clown (Eretmodus cyanostictus) is one of the so-called goby cichlids from Lake Tanganyika, and it occupies one of the most demanding habitats in freshwater fishkeeping: the turbulent surge zone along rocky shorelines, where waves break continuously and oxygen levels are sky-high. It ranges through the southern portion of the lake, from Kipili in Tanzania across to Moliro in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its body is adapted specifically for this world. A laterally compressed shape, a long spiny dorsal fin, a reduced swim bladder that keeps it negatively buoyant, and a downward-facing mouth that lets it press flat against rocks while scraping algae. In the aquarium, that characteristic bottom-hugging, rock-hopping movement is genuinely charming to watch. Pairs bond for life and use a fascinating bi-parental mouthbrooding system where the female incubates the eggs and then transfers the fry to the male to finish the job. That said, this is not a fish for beginners. It demands excellent water quality, a higher pH than most Tanganyikans, and a diet centered on algae and plant-based foods. It is territorial toward its own kind and should be kept as a single specimen or a bonded pair, with tankmates chosen from species that occupy different areas of the tank entirely.
