Azraq Toothcarp
Aphanius sirhani
A critically endangered desert oasis killifish worth keeping as a conservation project.

About
Found only in the Azraq Oasis of Jordan, Aphanius sirhani is one of the rarest fish in the world. The sole native finfish of that ancient desert spring system, now under serious threat from declining water levels driven by human activity. Its lineage stretches back roughly 13 million years, when the flooding of the Wadi Sirhan by the Red Sea likely isolated its ancestors and set this species on its own evolutionary path. In the wild it occupies shallow, vegetated and stony areas as well as muddier stretches of the oasis, feeding on insect larvae and small crustaceans. In the aquarium it is a continuously active fish with genuinely interesting behavior. Males establish temporary territories, display intensified coloration when dominant, and pursue females throughout an extended spawning season running from late spring into autumn. That vigorous spawning drive, combined with specific water requirements, makes it a poor fit for a community setup. It really should be kept as a species on its own, in a male-to-female ratio that favors females. Breeding is manageable once the tank is properly arranged, though eggs are tiny and require careful daily attention. This is not a fish you pick up on a whim. It is a long-term commitment, and captive reproduction carries genuine conservation value.
