Found lurking in the dim, vegetation-dense waterways of the upper and central Amazon basin, Tatia gyrina is a dwarf wood catfish ranging across Peru, Colombia, Brazil, and the rivers of northern Suriname. It is strongly associated with blackwater conditions, soft, acidic, low-oxygen environments where light barely penetrates the canopy of aquatic plants, though populations in the central Amazon also turn up in clearer waters, provided cover is dense enough to satisfy their preference for near-darkness. At a maximum of around 1.7 inches, this is a genuinely small catfish, and its diminutive size means it can be housed in a modest aquarium without fuss. That said, replicating its natural conditions does take some thought, which puts it in intermediate territory for most keepers. Tannin-stained water, plenty of leaf litter or fine-leaved plants, and subdued lighting will keep it comfortable and more likely to emerge during the day. Being an omnivore, it accepts a range of small foods without too much coaxing. If you already keep a blackwater biotope setup for small characins or other Amazonian species, this little catfish would slot in naturally and add an interesting, understated presence to the lower levels of the tank.
