Found in the Amazon River basin of Brazil, Geophagus altifrons is a large, deep-bodied cichlid and the designated type species of its genus. Though that status comes with an ironic twist: it is also one of the most frequently misidentified fish in the entire group. The confusion stems from a long history of related species being lumped under this name, and from the fact that juveniles of most Geophagus look nearly identical. Adults of the true G. altifrons can be identified by their reduced or absent midlateral spot, a feature unique within the genus, and by the complete lack of vertical bars on the flanks even under stress. In the aquarium, this species is a biparental mouthbrooder with a genuinely interesting family life. Pairs spawn on flat surfaces, and the female typically takes up the eggs, with both parents eventually sharing duties as the fry develop. Despite being listed as aggressive, the species is quite civil toward dissimilar tankmates outside of spawning periods and will not bother fish too large to swallow. It is gregarious and does best kept in groups of five or more, where a natural hierarchy forms. Kept in smaller numbers, weaker individuals often suffer. An intermediate-level species that rewards patient, attentive keepers.
