The threespot eartheater (Satanoperca daemon) is one of the larger members of its genus, native to the dark, acidic waters of the upper Rio Negro and the Orinoco basin across Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia. Its most reliable field mark is a pair of large dark blotches along the flank combined with a prominent ocellus at the upper base of the tail. A combination that separates it from close relatives like S. lilith, which carries only a single flank blotch. Despite a temperament listed as aggressive, this species is actually quite peaceful outside of spawning periods and poses little threat to tankmates too large to swallow whole. The real challenge with S. daemon is social, not predatory. It is naturally gregarious and should be kept in groups of at least five to eight individuals, since smaller groups often lead to weaker fish being harassed relentlessly by dominant ones. The species also has a strong instinct to dig, so a soft sand substrate is not optional. While the care level is sometimes described as beginner-friendly, that undersells the real demands here. This fish needs serious space, careful attention to water chemistry, and a thoughtful approach to stocking. It rewards patient keepers with genuinely interesting group dynamics and, occasionally, complex substrate-spawning behavior that is rarely achieved in home aquaria.
