The Tomini Dottyback (Pictichromis dinar) is a small but surprisingly combative fish native to the Gulf of Tomini off Sulawesi, Indonesia. It was originally collected from a specific site near Parigi, where a reef drop-off plunges steeply starting at about 8 meters, with a coral rubble slope leading to the edge. Exactly the kind of broken, complex terrain this fish prefers. In the wild it tucks itself into crevices and overhangs along steep outer reef faces, and that instinct for claiming a patch of territory carries straight into aquarium life. Don't let the compact size fool you. This is a fish with a big attitude, and it will defend its chosen corner against tankmates considerably larger than itself. That territorial streak makes stocking decisions important: it tends to do best when it's the last fish introduced to a system, and keeping it with other small, shy species can end badly. For intermediate keepers who understand dottyback behavior and plan their community accordingly, it can be a rewarding fish to keep. Its origins in the western Pacific place it alongside some genuinely colorful reef inhabitants, and the species itself carries the bold patterning typical of the Pictichromis genus. A species best appreciated when given space to establish itself properly.
