The red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) is probably the most recognizable freshwater turtle in the hobby, named for the bold red stripe running behind each eye. Originally from the river systems and slow-moving waterways of the central United States, it has since been introduced to countless regions worldwide, including Caribbean islands, often through well-meaning but misguided releases by keepers who underestimated the commitment involved. And that commitment is real: these turtles routinely live two to four decades, so taking one on is genuinely a long-term decision. In the wild, sliders spend a lot of time hauling out to bask, often piling onto logs and rocks in groups, then retreating to vegetated shallows to forage. Adults lean heavily toward plant matter, though they'll take protein readily. In captivity, their temperament can vary quite a bit from individual to individual. Some settle in and become reasonably handleable over time, while others remain defensive, biting or hissing when they feel threatened. Introductions of new tankmates or even rearranging the setup can trigger stress responses. Housing multiple sliders together is possible but requires careful observation. This is not a beginner's pet despite how freely it's been sold, and prospective keepers should go in with realistic expectations about space, filtration demands, and the sheer length of the commitment.
