Found in the blackwater streams and rivers of Sumatra, Indonesia, this small bagrid catfish, Mystus bimaculatus, is a compact and gentle species that rarely gets the attention it deserves. Adults top out at around two and a half inches at most, making it well suited to modestly sized aquariums. Its natural waters are extremely soft and acidic, so replicating those conditions, low pH, minimal hardness, perhaps some peat filtration, will bring out the best in these fish and is essentially a requirement rather than a preference. Behaviorally, this is about as easygoing as catfish get. It poses no threat to even the smallest tankmates and fits naturally alongside rasboras, small tetras, dwarf cichlids, glass catfish, and gouramis. Many of which share its native habitat in the wild. Keeping a small group rather than a lone individual makes a real difference, as the fish become noticeably more active and confident with conspecifics around. Like others in its genus, it has the capacity for facultative air-breathing, a useful adaptation in oxygen-depleted soft waters. Captive breeding has been achieved commercially through hormone induction, but natural spawning remains a challenge requiring very specific water conditions. Given that its native habitat faces ongoing pressure from habitat destruction, hobbyist breeding efforts are genuinely worthwhile.
