The white-spotted puffer (Canthigaster jactator) is a small toby found exclusively in Hawaiian waters, which makes it something of a regional specialty in the hobby. In the wild it ranges across lagoon and seaward reefs from the shallows down to considerable depth, moving over coral, rock, rubble, and sand in search of food. And food is very much this fish's main preoccupation. Its natural diet is impressively broad, taking in sponges, algae, tunicates, worms, crustaceans, echinoderms, and even small fish, which gives you a sense of the opportunistic, curious character you're bringing into your tank. Like other tobies, it carries the classic puffer body plan: a rounded, compact form covered in small white spots against a darker background, with the alert eyes and deliberate swimming style the family is known for. That same boldness that makes it entertaining to watch also means it will investigate, and likely nip, corals, invertebrates, and slower-moving tankmates. It's not a reef-safe fish by most practical definitions, and its carnivorous appetite needs to be matched with a varied meaty diet in captivity. Keepers with some saltwater experience will find it manageable and genuinely interesting to keep.
