Found in the blackwater drainages of southern Venezuela, Geophagus winemilleri is a member of the closely related G. surinamensis species group and originates from the lower Casiquiare drainage and the upper reaches of the Rio Negro. It is rare in the hobby, and fish sold under this name are sometimes misidentified members of related species, so sourcing confirmed specimens takes some effort. Visually, this cichlid is identified by a dark preopercular marking, a lateral spot sitting within the second of four vertical flank bars, and a red caudal fin decorated with large iridescent blue-to-white spots that can merge into streaks. The bars are usually only apparent under stress or during spawning. Despite being tagged as aggressive and territorial, outside of breeding this fish is surprisingly tolerant of similarly sized, peaceful tankmates that share its preference for soft, acidic water. It is a gregarious species that does best in groups of five or more, where a natural hierarchy will develop. Keeping fewer individuals risks stress and bullying of weaker fish. Breeding follows a larvophilous mouthbrooding pattern, with the female initially carrying eggs and newly hatched fry, though both parents may share duties as the fry mature. Pairs can take over a year to reach sexual maturity, so patience is a genuine requirement.
