Durban Zoanthid

Found along the coastlines of South Africa and into the Mozambican Exclusive Economic Zone, Zoanthus durbanensis is a colonial zoanthid that forms dense mats of polyps across shallow reef substrate. Like other members of its genus, it grows as tightly packed clusters, each individual polyp expanding to reveal a disc-shaped oral surface ringed with short tentacles. The coloration can vary across populations, which is fairly typical for zoanthids as a group. In the wild, colonies occupy moderate-light zones where water movement is consistent but not punishing, and those same conditions translate well to home reef systems. This species is considered a genuinely approachable choice for newer reef keepers. It tolerates the kind of minor parameter swings that are inevitable when you're still dialing in a system, and it responds well to standard zoanthid husbandry. Give it moderate flow to keep detritus from settling on the colony, and position it somewhere in the mid to lower regions of the tank where light is reasonable but not intense. Fragging is straightforward, making it a good candidate for trading at club nights. As with all zoanthids, handle with care. The palytoxin compounds present in this genus are a real consideration and basic precautions should always be taken.
