The gilded catfish (Zungaro zungaro), also known as the Jaú, is one of South America's true freshwater giants, native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins where it patrols the main channels of large tributaries over muddy substrates. In the wild, individuals reaching 130 cm and 50 kg are not unusual, which should give any prospective keeper serious pause. This is not a fish for most home aquariums. The 350-gallon minimum recommendation is genuinely a floor, not a guideline. In its natural habitat, the Jaú is a nocturnal predator that feeds primarily on other fish, and it has been documented following migratory schools of smaller species like Triportheus deep into seasonally flooded areas. That predatory drive is fully intact in captivity, so any tankmates small enough to fit in its mouth will eventually become a meal. Despite the beginner care rating in the data, which likely reflects its physical toughness and water-parameter tolerance, the sheer size and feeding requirements make this a species best suited to public aquariums or dedicated keepers with very large setups.
