Found along the southeastern edges of the North Atlantic, Alcyonium senegalense is a soft coral that doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves in the hobby. Most soft corals keeping company in reef tanks hail from the Indo-Pacific, so an Atlantic representative like this one stands out on that basis alone. As a member of the genus Alcyonium, it belongs to a group sometimes called dead man's fingers in other species, characterized by fleshy, lobate colonies that expand polyps to feed and contract when disturbed. Its care profile is refreshingly accessible. Moderate lighting and moderate flow are all it asks for, and it earns a genuine beginner rating rather than the overly optimistic kind. It is reef safe, posing no real threat to neighboring corals or invertebrates. Because Atlantic soft corals aren't commonly propagated in the trade, sourcing can be the real challenge rather than keeping it alive once you have it. If you do get your hands on a colony, give it a spot with consistent but not intense water movement, reasonable light, and stable water quality. It rewards that straightforward approach with steady, healthy growth.
