Mendezi Dwarf Cichlid

Found in the dark, acidic waters of the Rio Negro basin in Brazil, Apistogramma mendezi belongs to one of the most diverse dwarf cichlid genera in South America. What makes this species particularly interesting to collectors is that it's actually traded under at least three separate 'A' number codes, A220, A221, and A222, reflecting distinct-looking populations that differ mainly in caudal fin patterning and body coloration. One form, sometimes called A. mendezi 'orange', displays a warm orange flush on the belly that sets it apart from the other variants. Whether these represent true separate species or geographic color forms remains an open question. In the aquarium, this is a relatively forgiving species for a dwarf cichlid, manageable even for beginners comfortable with soft, acidic water conditions. It does best on its own or alongside small, peaceful dither fish like pencilfish. Mixing it with other Apistogramma species is best avoided. Breeding follows the typical Apistogramma pattern: the female takes charge of the eggs and fry inside a cave or crevice, and she can become quite defensive once spawning is underway. In tighter quarters, removing the male after spawning is often the safer call to protect everyone involved.
