Found only in a small forest stream in the Peruvian Amazon, Apistogramma paulmuelleri is a miniature cichlid that packs a remarkable amount of visual complexity into a fish rarely exceeding an inch and a half. Adult males develop vivid red markings and metallic blue-green lines across the cheeks and gill covers, a rounded caudal fin with subtle asymmetry between the lobes, and warm yellow to orange tones on the lower abdomen. Females are more subdued but can display a lateral band that breaks into a row of distinct oval spots depending on mood. In the wild this species was collected alongside tetras, other cichlids, and pencilfish in what appears to be soft, acidic blackwater habitat, so replicating those conditions in the aquarium goes a long way toward keeping it comfortable and colorful. Despite being listed as beginner-friendly, it does have some social quirks worth knowing: it tends to do best when kept on its own or alongside small dither fish like Nannostomus species, and mixing it with other Apistogramma is generally a recipe for conflict. Breeding follows the typical dwarf cichlid pattern, with females taking the lead on guarding eggs and fry in caves or crevices. In tighter quarters, it may be wise to move the male out once spawning begins, as the female can become quite defensive.
