The Arabian Angelfish (Pomacanthus asfur) is one of the most visually distinct large angels from the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, with its range extending south along the East African coast to Zanzibar. Adults wear a deep blue-black body cut through by a broad, curved yellow band sweeping from the dorsal region downward. A pattern so recognizable that misidentification is almost impossible once you've seen it. Juveniles, like many pomacanthids, look completely different, sporting the white-and-blue ringed pattern common to the genus before slowly transitioning to adult coloration. In the wild, these fish occupy semi-protected inshore reefs with healthy coral growth, where they graze primarily on sponges and tunicates rather than coral polyps directly. That said, they can still cause problems in a reef setting and are generally considered a risk around ornamental invertebrates. In the aquarium, this species is territorial and combative toward conspecifics. Two should not be kept together unless they form a naturally bonded pair. Despite being labeled intermediate in care, the sheer tank size required and the fish's assertive temperament mean this is really a species for dedicated keepers with large, well-planned systems. Given the right space, it's a long-lived and personable fish with a real presence.
