Night Aulonocara

The Night Aulonocara (Aulonocara hueseri) is one of the peacock cichlids from Lake Malawi, endemic to a handful of locales including Likoma Island, Monkey Bay, and Nkhata Bay. In the wild, this species hugs sandy substrates, hunting for the small invertebrates buried within. A foraging strategy shared by other members of the Aulonocara genus, which use specialized sensory pores along the head to detect prey movement beneath the sand. Males develop the bold, iridescent blue coloration typical of peacock cichlids, while females remain a more subdued tan or brown. Adults stay relatively compact, generally topping out around three inches, which makes them manageable but still means they need meaningful horizontal swimming space. In the aquarium, keeping them over a sand bottom isn't just aesthetically appropriate. It lets them express their natural digging and sifting behaviors. Like other Lake Malawi cichlids, they appreciate hard, alkaline water and do best when tankmates are chosen thoughtfully, ideally other peacocks or haps of similar size and temperament. This is a species well-suited to hobbyists who have some cichlid experience and want a colorful, personable fish without taking on the aggression levels of mbuna.
