Aulonocara sp. walteri is one of those cichlids that sits in an interesting position. Well established in the hobby for years, yet still awaiting formal scientific description. Its trade name has caused plenty of confusion along the way, with the fish frequently mislabeled as 'Aulonocara walteri' as though it were a described species, which it isn't. In the wild, it's known only from Chizumulu and Likoma, two islands sitting off the central eastern coast of Lake Malawi near Mozambique, giving it one of the more restricted natural ranges among the peacocks. Like most Aulonocara, males carry the color while females stay comparatively plain, and that color difference matters when stocking. Males will direct aggression toward any fish wearing a similar pattern. Keeping a single male with four to six females is the standard approach, and it holds up well here both for reducing tension and for encouraging natural breeding behavior. Tankmate selection takes some thought: differently patterned cichlids like Copadichromis or Placidochromis can work, and Labidochromis caeruleus is often cited as a compatible mbuna option. Other Aulonocara should generally be avoided due to hybridization risk. Breeding follows the typical peacock pattern. Maternal mouthbrooding, egg-spot fertilization, and females carrying fry for up to four weeks. Accessible enough for beginners who do their homework on Malawi setups.
