Bala Shark

The bala shark (Balantiocheilos melanopterus) is one of the most recognizable fish in the hobby, with its torpedo-shaped silver body and neatly black-edged fins giving it a clean, almost streamlined look that's hard to miss in a shop tank. In the wild it inhabits the large and medium-sized rivers and lakes of Southeast Asia, the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo, where it feeds on small crustaceans, insects, rotifers, and phytoplankton. Wild populations are now considered rare or locally extinct across much of their range, likely due to large-scale habitat changes rather than collection pressure alone. In the aquarium this species is peaceful toward fish it can't fit in its mouth, but its size, constant energy, and vigorous feeding style make it a poor match for slow-moving or delicate tankmates. It's also genuinely gregarious and needs to be kept in groups of five or more, since smaller numbers tend to result in persistent bullying of subordinate fish. The honest reality is that bala sharks frequently get sold as juveniles with little guidance about how large they actually grow, and long-term care in a home aquarium is a serious commitment that most setups simply cannot accommodate. They're best suited to experienced keepers with very large tanks and robust, similarly-sized companions.
