Banded Leporinus

The banded leporinus (Leporinus fasciatus) is one of those fish that turns heads for all the right reasons. And a few wrong ones. Native to the Amazon basin, where adults patrol rocky, fast-moving stretches of river, this species is built for current, with a torpedo-shaped body dressed in alternating black and yellow bands. Here's the catch: juveniles start out with just five bands, and roughly every six months a new stripe appears until adults carry eight to ten. That pattern shift alone makes it fascinating to watch over time, though it also means young fish are frequently sold without buyers realizing what they're getting into. A fully grown specimen pushing a foot in length needs serious space and appropriately scaled tankmates. Anything small enough to swallow is fair game. In the wild, banded leporinus gather in large shoals, but in the aquarium, small groups often leads to squabbling. A single specimen works well in a community of larger, robust fish, or you can keep six or more together in a suitably spacious setup. They'll browse algae and graze the bottom between meals, but don't rely on that to protect your plants. This species can make short work of a planted tank if it's hungry.
