Found drifting through shaded, slow-moving coastal rivers and forested lowlands in Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea, Barboides gracilis is a genuine micro-fish. One of the smallest cyprinids you're likely to encounter in the hobby. It occasionally turns up under the trade names 'dwarf amber barb' or 'ember barb,' and has built a quiet following among nano aquarium enthusiasts, though it remains genuinely scarce. Its tiny adult size is the result of miniaturization, an evolutionary process in which the fish reach sexual maturity at a fraction of the size of their closest relatives. You can tell them apart from similar small barbs by the absence of barbels and lateral line, and by a distinctive figure-eight-shaped single nostril on each side of the snout. Despite their peaceful temperament, these fish are not well suited to a mixed community. Anything large enough to view them as a snack, or boisterous enough to stress them, is a bad neighbor. They do best alongside other genuinely small, gentle species. More importantly, they are a schooling fish at heart, and a group of 20 or more will behave far more naturally, show richer coloration, and spend less time hiding. Males become noticeably more colorful and slimmer than females when the group is settled and in condition.
