The tinfoil barb (Barbonymus schwanenfeldii) is a large, fast-moving cyprinid from the river systems of Southeast Asia, including the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo, where it inhabits everything from major rivers to flooded fields and drainage canals. In the aquarium it's immediately recognizable by its bright silver body, red fins, and the distinctive black submarginal stripe running along each lobe of the forked caudal fin. A useful feature for telling it apart from the closely related B. altus, which lacks those stripes and tends toward a more golden-bronze body tone. Despite being sold as peaceful, this species comes with some important caveats. It will consume smaller tankmates given the chance, and its constant, energetic movement can stress slower or more timid fish. Robust companions of similar size, larger cichlids, catfish, and other big cyprinids, are the sensible choices. In the wild these fish move in large schools, and groups of six or more are strongly recommended in captivity; smaller numbers can produce skittish or even irritable individuals. The bigger practical concern for most hobbyists is sheer scale: juveniles are routinely sold at a couple of inches with minimal guidance on adult size, and tinfoil barbs are reportedly among the most commonly returned fish at shops. This one genuinely needs a very large aquarium and a long-term commitment.
