The Barredtail Squeaker (Synodontis decorus) is one of the more visually interesting members of the squeaker catfish family, sporting a pale body covered in bold dark spots and a dramatically elongated dorsal fin ray that sets it apart from most of its relatives. In the wild it's a native of the Congo River basin, ranging across a broad stretch of that system including Pool Malebo, and the Ubangi and Kasai drainages. Though notably absent from the Luvua and Luapula systems. Like other Synodontis, it has the characteristic inverted feeding posture that gives the group much of their personality in a tank. It's a peaceful enough fish for a large community, generally getting along with similarly sized tankmates, though it will make a meal of anything small enough to fit in its mouth. So small tetras and shrimp are off the guest list. Given its potential to reach well over a foot in length, it needs a roomy setup with plenty of hiding spots, driftwood, and dim areas where it can feel secure during the day. Intermediate keepers who can accommodate its size will find it a rewarding and characterful long-term resident.
