The Dwarf Marbled Catfish (Batrochoglanis raninus), sometimes sold under the name Bumblebee Catfish, is a stocky little ambush hunter from the slow-moving creeks and shaded river margins of the Amazon basin, Guyana, and French Guiana. In the wild it gravitates toward dim, deeper stretches where the current barely moves, the substrate is covered in leaf litter and debris, and fallen branches provide daytime cover. It spends its daylight hours wedged under something solid, then stalks prey after dark, engulfing whatever comes within range. Younger fish start out on micro-crustaceans and insect larvae before graduating to fish of surprisingly respectable size relative to their own body. Something worth keeping in mind when stocking tankmates. In the aquarium it carries that same secretive, territorial energy. Bottom-dwelling neighbors like loaches or other catfish tend to trigger competition over caves and hiding spots, so tank layout matters. Providing multiple distinct territories with caves, driftwood, and dense cover goes a long way toward keeping the peace. This is a rewarding fish for a keeper who enjoys watching a reclusive predator on its own terms, but the combination of territorial behavior and a carnivorous appetite makes it a better fit for someone with a bit of experience under their belt.
