The blackbelt cichlid (Vieja maculicauda) is named for the broad dark vertical band wrapping its flanks. Though longtime keepers will tell you the 'belt' also refers to the fish's no-nonsense disposition. Native to the Atlantic slope of Central America, its range runs from the Usumacinta drainage in Guatemala down to the Chagres River in Panama, where it inhabits slow-moving rivers and lakes, favoring murky, sandy or muddy substrates and the shelter of submerged logs and woody debris along shaded banks. Wild fish are opportunistic bottom feeders, grazing on aquatic vegetation, terrestrial plant matter, seeds, and organic detritus. One notable trait: this species can tolerate brackish and even marine conditions, hinting at the rugged adaptability that makes it reasonably manageable in captivity for intermediate keepers. That said, its temperament demands respect. It is a genuinely aggressive cichlid and should only share a tank with similarly sized, similarly assertive fish. Anything smaller is likely to be viewed as a meal. During spawning and brood care, that aggression intensifies considerably. Pairs will deposit several hundred eggs on flat rock surfaces and defend them fiercely, tending the clutch until the fry are free-swimming roughly a week after hatching. For those wanting to breed them, growing out a group of juveniles and letting natural pairs form is the recommended approach.
