Blue danio

Found on the Malay Peninsula, Danio kerri, now technically placed in the genus Brachydanio by some authorities, is a small, active schooler that doesn't get the shelf space it deserves at most fish shops. Part of the reason is that it can be genuinely tricky to track down, and past confusion with similar-looking species hasn't helped its reputation. When you do find it, the base body colour is either a soft powdery blue or a yellow-green, with pinkish-yellow lateral stripes running from the gill cover back toward the tail. A subtle but appealing colour scheme that really comes to life under good lighting when a group is swimming together. And a group is exactly how you should keep them: a school of eight or more allows the fish to settle in, reduces skittishness, and encourages the males to display their best colours as they jostle for female attention. This species makes no real demands on water chemistry and fits naturally into a peaceful community alongside other small cyprinids, tetras, livebearers, loaches, and catfish. It's also a reasonable candidate for a themed biotope setup based on southern Thailand. Genuinely beginner-friendly, adaptable, and interesting to watch in numbers. Kerri just needs someone willing to hunt it down.
