The rainbow parrotfish (Scarus guacamaia) is the biggest parrotfish in the Atlantic, and one of the most visually complex reef fish you'll ever see. Adults display a wild patchwork of green, orange, and blue-green scales that shift depending on the angle of the light, while juveniles look almost entirely different. Brown with white stripes. This species ranges across the western Atlantic from Bermuda and Florida down through the Caribbean and as far south as Argentina, living on coral reefs as adults but spending their early lives in mangrove habitats, which makes healthy mangrove ecosystems critical to their survival. In the wild, rainbow parrotfish are constantly on the move, grazing benthic algae from hard surfaces throughout the day. They're also known to use a specific cave or shelter as a home base, retreating there at night or when threatened. And they apparently use the position of the sun to navigate back to it, which is a fascinating behavioral detail. Keeping one is realistically out of reach for nearly all hobbyists: the minimum tank requirement is immense, the diet is specialized, and the fish's constant movement demands enormous space. This is genuinely a species best admired on a reef dive.
