Slender danios (Brachydanio rosea) are a relatively recent arrival in the hobby, but they've earned a solid reputation quickly. They're hardy, reasonably priced, and genuinely beginner-friendly. Native to the Mekong River basin across northern Thailand and Laos, they've since been recorded further north than originally described. The body is slim and streamlined, and the species is sometimes sold under the name 'purple passion danio', which gives you a sense of the rosy-to-violet wash that makes them stand out in a well-lit tank. One thing worth knowing before you buy: hybridization with the closely related pearl danio (Brachydanio albolineata) is widespread among captive-bred stock, particularly from eastern European breeders. Fish showing a heavy mix of powdery blue on the body alongside red in the unpaired fins at suspiciously low prices are likely hybrids, so if species purity matters to you, choose carefully. In terms of behavior, these are about as easygoing as danios get. They're a schooling fish and genuinely do better in groups of eight or more. You'll see calmer fish, better color from the males as they compete with each other, and the kind of purposeful, coordinated movement that makes a school actually worth watching. They get along with most peaceful community fish and are egg scatterers that will occasionally reproduce on their own in a planted tank.
