Found drifting along leaf-littered stream beds across South America, Bunocephalichthys verrucosus is one of the banjo catfishes, a group named for the distinctively flattened, elongated body shape that genuinely resembles the instrument when viewed from above. The rough, warty texture of its skin and mottled brown coloration make this fish nearly indistinguishable from decomposing leaf litter on a riverbed, which is exactly the point. It is an ambush feeder and a master of stillness, capable of sitting motionless for hours at a stretch. In the aquarium this behavior continues, so do not mistake inactivity for illness. This fish spends most of its day tucked under wood, beneath leaves, or buried in soft substrate, becoming more active after lights out. A sandy bottom with plenty of leaf litter and hiding spots will bring out the best in it. It accepts a range of meaty foods alongside plant-based offerings, though getting it to eat during the day can take some patience. With a potential lifespan stretching well over a decade and a peaceful temperament toward tankmates it cannot swallow, this is a rewarding long-term project for a keeper willing to set up a quiet, well-decorated biotope and appreciate a fish that rewards patience over flash.
