Celebes Beauty Shrimp
Caridina spongicola
A bright little freshwater shrimp with a wild Sulawesi backstory.

About
The Celebes Beauty Shrimp (Caridina spongicola) is one of the more intriguing members of the ancient lake shrimps from Sulawesi, Indonesia. What makes this species genuinely unusual is spelled out right in its scientific name. Spongicola means sponge-dweller, and in the wild these shrimp live in close association with freshwater sponges found in the ancient Malili lake system. That relationship is a real rarity in the freshwater shrimp world. In the aquarium, they tend to behave much like other small ornamental Caridina species, spending their days picking at biofilm and grazing surfaces, which makes them useful little cleanup crew members as well as interesting animals to watch. Despite their exotic origins, they carry a beginner-friendly care rating, which is somewhat surprising given that many Sulawesi lake shrimp are considered a challenge. That said, replicating the general conditions of their home lakes is still worth doing properly if you want them to thrive long-term. They are a relatively small shrimp and peaceful by nature, posing no threat to tankmates. If you enjoy shrimp keeping and want something a little out of the ordinary without taking on a genuinely difficult species, the Celebes Beauty Shrimp is a good conversation starter.
