Found racing through the rocky, oxygen-rich rapids of the Xingu River drainage in Brazil, Teleocichla centrarchus is a compact cichlid that most hobbyists have never heard of. And that's a shame. This is a rheophilic species through and through, meaning it evolved for fast-moving water with high dissolved oxygen, and that background shapes everything about keeping it successfully. Adults stay small, typically under three and a half inches, with the streamlined, elongated body shape you'd expect from a fish that spends its life clinging to boulders in strong current. Coloration tends toward muted earth tones with subtle patterning. Not flashy, but with the kind of quiet detail that grows on you over time. In the aquarium it does best with a setup that mimics its native habitat: smooth river stones, good water movement from a powerhead or strong filter return, and clean, soft-to-moderately-hard water. It's a carnivore, so high-quality meaty foods are the foundation of its diet. Temperament is typical of small cichlids. Manageable, but with enough personality that tank mates and territory need some thought. This one suits a keeper who enjoys building a biotope and watching a specialized fish thrive on its own terms.
