The Asian snakehead (Channa striata) is one of the most recognizable and culturally significant freshwater fish across southern and southeastern Asia, where it has been a staple food fish for centuries. It ranges from Pakistan through Thailand and into southern China, thriving in slow, murky lowland waters. Ponds, swamps, flooded rice paddies, and sluggish canals are all home territory. One of its most remarkable adaptations is obligate air-breathing: it must surface regularly to gulp air, and during dry seasons it can burrow into bottom mud and wait out droughts by living off stored fat reserves. In the wild it eats just about anything it can catch. Fish, frogs, snakes, insects, tadpoles, and crustaceans. In an aquarium, expect the same attitude. This is a dedicated predator with a big personality, and tankmates are generally a bad idea unless they are similarly sized and robust. Despite that, it is considered manageable even for less experienced keepers who understand what they are getting into. A large, intelligent fish that interacts with its keeper but demands serious space and a secure lid, since snakeheads are notorious escape artists. Several regions outside its native range have recorded ecological damage following introductions, which is worth keeping in mind around responsible fishkeeping.
