The checkerboard cichlid (Crenicara punctulatum) is one of those fish that rewards a keeper willing to pay close attention. Native to a broad sweep of the upper Amazon basin, ranging through Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Brazil, it turns up in shaded forest creeks and along sandy riverbanks where leaf litter and marginal vegetation break up the current. The common name comes from the neat rows of dark spots arranged across the flanks, giving the fish a geometric, almost tile-like pattern. Males, which are larger and more colorful, develop extended finnage that makes them unmistakable next to the plainer females. What really sets this species apart, though, is its reproductive biology: juveniles are all female, and around eight months of age the dominant individual in a group undergoes a full sex change, becoming a functional male. This protogynous system is rarely seen in cichlids and makes group dynamics genuinely interesting to watch. In the aquarium it does best in soft, acidic water that reflects its blackwater origins, and appreciates a sandy substrate with leaf litter or dim lighting. It is a peaceful fish for its family but can be shy, so tankmates should be chosen carefully. Intermediate-level keepers who enjoy observing nuanced social behavior will find it quietly fascinating.
