Found on the Atlantic slope of Guatemala and Belize, Cichlasoma bocourti is a large, territorially assertive cichlid with a personality to match its size. Adults can reach well over a foot in length, so this is not a fish you can squeeze into a modest setup. A spacious tank is genuinely necessary, not just recommended. Like many Central American cichlids of its size, it carries itself with the kind of confidence that can quickly turn into aggression toward tankmates, especially in tighter quarters or during breeding activity. Tankmates need to be chosen carefully: fish that are too small will likely be viewed as a threat or a meal, while anything too timid will be bullied relentlessly. Robust, similarly-sized species tend to fare better as companions, though there are no guarantees. As a carnivore, it does best on a protein-rich diet. This is an intermediate-level fish not because it is particularly delicate in terms of water chemistry, but because managing its temperament and providing the right social environment takes some experience with larger, assertive cichlids. If you enjoy the personality-driven side of the cichlid hobby and have the space for it, this species from Central America can be a deeply rewarding long-term project, often living a decade or more in good conditions.
